The ViewBirmingham Review
A good night out with lots of variety awaits you at one of Birmingham’s best nightspots.
The Venue
Oceana is located on the corner of Hurst Street, just on the fringe of Chinatown. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much, but on entering you realise the size of the venue. As you enter, the first bar on your left is an area to get the night going and it’s normally a good place to meet friends. Altogether Oceana boasts seven themed rooms, such as the Aspen Ski Lodge complete with wood furniture, the New York Disco with a funky backlit dance floor and the Parisian Boudoir with velvet curtains and intimate booths. Each of the themed rooms has its own bar making getting a drink an extremely easy prospect.
The People
Oceana isn’t the most up market club, but it still feels extremely clean, fresh and the VIP rooms give it a sense of exclusivity. The bar staff and bouncers work with efficiency and professionalism. Since each room has a different style, the vibe can change as you walk around; the Disco room is a bit cheesy and unpretentious, while the RnB of the Ice Room gives more attitude and serious grinding. During the week most nights are aimed at students with cheap drinks and chart music the norm. At weekends things get slightly more serious, with Saturdays being funky house and RnB in the main room; this is advertised for over 21’s only.
The Drink
Lots of offers pop up during the week, such as student nights where all drinks are under a pound between 10pm-11pm, selected drinks are £1.20 on Tuesdays and £1.50 on Wednesdays. They get more expensive on the weekend but there are still some good offers on, which change week in, week out.
The Last Word
With the opening of Gatecrasher many will forget about Oceana, but it’s still a reliable night out that delivers entertainment and value. Mainstream clubs can’t really do much more than that.
