The ViewBirmingham Review
This is a bar/club for Birmingham's young, beautiful and fashionable people. Go and party like a wild one.
The Venue
Rainbow is located on the extremely underrated Digbeth High Street and is about five minutes down the road from the Custard Factory complex. The inside is quite random. There is a main bar area then a long corridor to a covered outdoors area which has a hot food stand (mighty handy for those late night munchies). The place looks a bit run down with chipped, dark red paint but this just adds to its laid-back glamour.
The People
The people who go are a mix of mere mortals, who just like a drink, and fashionistas, who find it necessary to keep their sunglasses on inside a bar in the middle of the night. If you're arty or you're just fed-up with following the herd around Birmingham's various chain bars you will, at some point, end up at Rainbow. People spray huge graffiti murals on boards on the wall or start rapping surrounded by a circle of people. There's an 'anything goes' atmosphere and there's generally a relaxed vibe. You won't be told off for wearing trainers in here.
The Music
Rainbow has a few regular nights and some that are only on very occasionally like the monthly live music and vintage market. Music ranges from live samba bands to trance. Naked Lunch is highly recommended and goes on until the morning. You're probably best to check regularly for details of a good night that's coming up.
The Drink
You get a larger selection at the main bar where there is a few intriguing looking bottled beers. Drinks are not that cheap but they do have a couple of promotions which only cost around £1.50. The bar outside only sells the promotion drinks which are usually bottled beer. On certain nights they do a wine promotion where a bottle costs £6 but don't expect it to taste amazing.
The Last Word
Put on your wackiest glad rags and head down to Rainbow for a night of bohemian excess.
