have you considered the peal district national park? that shouldnt take you too long to get to and certainly fits the bill with some beautiful countryside.

not looking to do anything too strenuous, just take a few walks, snuggle up to a warm fire, have some traditional food. not sure whether to rent a cottage for a few days or go to a b&b in a village somewhere.

There are lots of great places to go for walks in the black country, so you are not short of options. Having been to the leasowes a few times i think you may enjoy it. Its a beautiful park to visit, i think it was designed by a poet, and its ranked highly by the english heritage. There are lots of walks to do and its quite stunning

anywhere that is rural is good by me and the shorter the drive the better. the more info and ideas people give is a positive, this is all very helpful. thanks for explaining what it meant silver back, i only moved to birmingham a few years ago and to my shame haven't ventured to the surrounding areas, but i'm hoping to put that right.
