The ViewBirmingham Review
With lots of space and plenty to do, this is an entertaining venue.
The Venue
The Gosta Green is on Holt Street, at the rear of Aston University’s campus. The area is teeming with students and there is an industrial and commercial estate nearby, so there are plenty of people coming and going. The main entrance is via Holt Street. As you enter, the bar is directly in front with a large room to the right offering comfy sofas and the way out to the sizeable garden. The Gosta is a Scream pub, which is synonymous with students. The decor is modern: leather sofas and wood flooring. There are wacky touches here and there, like a huge rack of fairy lights covering a ceiling. Inside, there are lots of fruit machines, pool tables and quiz machines to keep you entertained, there are also lots of TVs and two big screens showing everything from music videos to the football. It’s a great place to come and watch the match.
The People
The Gosta is predominantly a student pub. The student populace keeps the place lively and there is always music playing or large groups of people congregating for drinks. It keeps the atmosphere friendly and upbeat. As with most pubs in the chain, the staff tend to be students so they happily work with a smile and small talk is pleasant and doesn’t feel forced.
The Food
The food is standard for the type of venue, with offers like beer and burger for as little as £3.50 (with a privilege card) or £5.50 without. Beer and a curry is a shockingly low £3.50, after 3pm, and two meals only cost £5.95. The food isn’t great, but the low prices compensate for it. Tuck in between the hours of 11am and 9pm.
The Drink
Drinks are cheap (cheaper with the student-only discount yellow card) and the variety is extensive: cocktails, wine, cider and draughts beers like Carling, Fosters and Stella. Expect to pay around £1.90 or £2.30 for a Carling or £2.20/£2.60 for Stella, again the price is dependent on your student status. You can also get multiple shots racked up, which can lead to a memorable or fuzzy night, depending on how many you neck.
The Last Word
A good pub for a drink with friends, but it doesn’t contain anything to make it more than another part of a chain.
