A student bar with a difference.

The Venue
Located in the heart of the student metropolis that is Selly Oak, this bar has made a conscious effort to distance itself from the generic design of neighbouring Scream-style pubs. Inside, you will find bar stalls, American-style diner booths and a retro games machine (Mortal Kombat!) on its spacious floor. In keeping with its independent status, the walls are adorned with pop art prints and scrawled gobbets from songs and film which will appeal to the more louche barfly.

The Atmosphere
It is impossible to review this bar without mentioning its excellent bar staff, who appear to have an endless amount of energy, verve and gregariousness that make the customer feel instantly comfortable. If you decide to order a cocktail, expect a scene reminiscent of Tom Cruise in Cocktail. Clientele usually comprises of students, though not exclusively. It is also the official pre-Snobs bar (Wednesdays) and indie ravers Rag & Bone do their warm up once a month on a Friday here, which means it can become rowdy. If you are not an aficionado of loud indie music then stay away on these particular evenings.

The Food
Don’t expect any grand culinary feats but the usual pub staples. A burger and chips including a pint of Carlsberg costs £2.49, which is an excellent deal for a decent and sustaining portion. There is also the choice of two meals for £4.99. The quality of the food is equal to that of any student pub - stodgy and plain without a customary dollop of ketchup.

The Drink
If you’re seeking a cheap night out, The Indie Lounge is the way to go, often offering reductions and discounts on its many themed nights and parties – on Mondays a pint of Carlsberg is just £1. Bottles of the same beer are £1.25 all week long. With no ales and a sparse wine list, it harbours no pretence of being anything other than a good-time bar serving cheap lager and the odd cocktail.

The Last Word
A breath of fresh air from the homogenous student bar, The Indie Lounge is warm, welcoming, fun, and just as cheap.
