The ViewBirmingham Review
Located on the top floor of the glass-shopping haven of The Bullring, Pizza Express provides a welcome relief from the normal fast food chains that you find throughout cities across the country. The VenueIts clean, chic décor, of silver chairs and tables, compliment the big glass windows. Being able to see the fresh ingredients and the chefs do their thing is also a nice touch.
The AtmosphereWhether you’re popping in for lunch or going out for dinner Pizza Express will suit everybody at all times of day and night. The staff are attentive, friendly and totally child friendly. Its extremely popular, but you are seated quickly and service is prompt.
The FoodLets face it, whatever you opt for you can’t really go wrong. Starters range from between £4-£5. The Bruschetta con Funghi with its juicy Portobello mushrooms engulfed in béchamel sauce with the sweetness of red onions and balsamic vinegar served with dough sticks is a good kick start. If you wanted something a tad lighter then there are some fresh and simple salads to have your mouth watering and will leave it feeling refreshed and ready for the main course.
Pizzas can be quite greasy and sit heavy on your stomach but at Pizza Express they have got them rolled to perfection. The majority of the pizzas are around the £7.50 mark and with so many toppings to choose from you can really fill your boots. There are plenty of classic pasta dishes available from around £7.50 and if you’re on a health kick then you can opt from a variety of salads from around £8 options include tuna, chicken, goats cheese and new potatoes.
There is a good selection of vegetarian options available so you wouldn’t just have to opt for a marghertia!
If you have any room left then the dessert menu might just tempt you with puddings and sundaes ranging between £3-£4.50. The traditional Tirammisu, Cheesecake, Banoffe Pie and Chocolate Fudge Cake are all worth a punt, if you’re feeling like you need a sugar hit then one of the sundaes are decadence in a glass.
The DrinkIf you’re feeling really Italian and want to do things properly then you could start with a cheeky aperitivi, that’s a pimms, campari martini etc to you and me! There is a broad wine list with most bottles coming in at around £15-18 mark. There are also beers, spirits and soft drinks for you to wash all that pizza down with.
The Last WordPizza Express has managed to hit the hut where it hurts. This is the place to go if you’re potty about pizza. The service, food and surroundings all make for an enjoyable eating experience. More expensive then some pizza joints but the service and freshness of the food makes it worth the extra dough!
